They are currently trialing this system side by side with AMB transponders for Vintage Road Racing in the UK.

Cost is $7 per "Transponder", its actually just a sticker with an RFID tag that goes on the bike, helmet, wherever. Alex claims its every bit as accurate as the $500 AMB transponders.

There would be a small investment required by the club of $3-4k for the antennas but they would be owned by the club and be moved from track to track, unless the tracks bought into it and got their own antennas.

They also have a proper Web Services End Point to extract the data.

$7 one time is a heck of a lot better that $500 + additional subscriptions, and if it works for British Superbike Racing it should work for us.

Just saying...

You wouldn't even care if it got damaged as the actual device is cheaper than just the AMB clip .

Sounds like a good thing to consider. I suppose my vintage transponder is going to die a sad death one day.

There is a guy in Australia that repairs them, and he said the old yellow and red ones last forever as they were made in Germany. They just need the battery replaced after a couple of decades. He does it, and there is a guy in Texas that does it as well. I think its around $50

He said the new ones are made in China, not that there is anything wrong with that as you can get some high-quality products from China, but these are built down to a price and he fixes more of those than the old ones.

The only thing I notice with the old ones is that they need to be fairly low on the bottom fork leg, and pointing down.

Alex in the UK wants a new registration process so when you get your license each January you get 2 tags that are applied to your helmets certifying they meet requirements and are not damaged, and the bar code links back to your medical and emergency contact information. I thought that was a cool idea.

a system like this was used at SOAR for a few years before they reverted back to the transponder system. I suggest that Ken at SOAR would be a good source of the pros/cons of a RFID system.
