Rule Clarification #1 - Can someone help

Postby Brian Stevenson » Sat Jul 27, 2024 8:52 am

The P3 rules States the following

THREE CLASSES OF PERIOD THREE SUPERBIKE:
Lightweight
- 250cc two stroke water-cooled
- 400cc two stroke air-cooled
- 550cc four cylinder, four stroke
- 650cc two cylinder, four stroke
- unlimited single cylinder, four stroke
Middleweight
- 350cc two stroke water-cooled
- 550cc three cylinder, two stroke air-cooled
- 750cc four cylinder, four stroke air-cooled
- 860cc two cylinder, four stroke
Heavyweight
- 750cc two stroke
- 750cc four stroke water-cooled
- 1100cc four stroke
- unlimited four stroke pushrod

AND...

This class is for machines built up to and including 1982 with exceptions allowed where production continued unchanged

I was offered a 1982 VF750F for a good price, i.e. free.

Is this bike eligible? This bike is NOT the VFR750 that I believe came out in 1986

I don't believe they were sold in Canada in 1982 as Honda Canada treats Canadians like the poor red headed step child and we don't get things that the rest of the world get until years later.

I can 100% confirm that this bike is a 1982. The 10th position in the VIN on both the frame and motor is "C", ergo, the bike is 1982. I also have a letter from Honda Japan confirming the build date and year for the VIN.

Following on from that, why then wouldn't the 83 and 84 model be eligible given the fact they were 100% unchanged. Just to be clear. i'm not asking to run a 1983 bike. Just curious. A 83 GPZ550 is eligible for P3 as an example.

Looking back through the records available, only the 1982 VF750F was allowed in the P3. My understanding is that the bike was not considered P3 when the rules were developed because it was not available in Canada. The shaft drive Magna 750 was eligible since it was available in Canada. A later rule change voted in moved the VF750F up to Heavyweight class. Probably not competitive in P3H which is why no one has asked to allow in the later years of the model.
