Thoughts on adding an overall points system to the series?

Postby kirbster » Tue Sep 14, 2021 8:13 am

Now that we have a handicap system, we can literally handicap every class against every other.
This could add an additional element to the series, and provide additional competition between classes..

So we would have class championships along side of overall...

Thoughts?

Hi Kirby,

I am a little unclear about what you are proposing. Can you provide a couple generic examples?

Thanks

We would maintain a division structure as we have it.
However - Handicaps would be calculated downward from P5F1 as the fastest class.
So P5F1 would have no handicap applied.
Everything else would be comparatively calculated.
Right now each division has a zero handicap class- In middleweight it would be P5F2, every other bike class in that division is given a handicap based on maximum potential.

So it's actually very similar to what we are doing now- but rather than only handicap in each division- we would handicap from fastest to slowest across all classes. In theory this means every class is on essentially equal footing.

The handicap system was never designed to put an average bike with average riders on the top of the box. It was intended to keep results tight between classes of for equally ranked machinery and riders.

So, we would still do a Light Medium Heavy division, but we would run a parallel overall points system as well.

The idea is we would then be able to directly measure each team across the entire spectrum of classes.

I see there has been little interest in trying this idea.
All good!
The current series seems to be running well and we have had very good participation.

Bring on 2022 - looks like we may actually get a full season this year.... fingers crossed.

Maybe try again for 2023?

I'm not against the idea (obviously) but there is some weirdness with some handicaps when you direct compare across all classes and periods. Maybe we just need to collect a bit more data first.

Sure, an overall points class sounds good.
Why not?
