Website and Board Issues

Postby Brian Stevenson » Tue May 13, 2025 9:24 am

When the VRRA.ca domain was registered, and VRRA Website and Forum/Board were set up, it was done by Don Gosen and he used a small Canadian company out of Simcoe, Ontario called Kwic. They were actually great and I generally like using small Canadian companies like this.

Unfortunately, last year Kwic were bought by Rogers and subsequently Rogers were bought by Comcast Xfinity from the US. That is why you see all the Rogers branding being changed to Xfinity. The sad part is the 50% of the Canadian telecommunications industry and infrastructure was just sold to the US and no one said a word. It was just rubber stamped by the government.

Comcast only wants Kwic’s subscribers, so they are shutting down all the hosting services. This means that we had to move our stuff, but since VRRA.ca is effectively “owned” by Don and more specifically Don’s old company that he sold, we can’t just do that. There is paperwork that needs to be filled out for approval by the CIRA, and I’m still waiting for signatures.

So this afternoon my time, Comcast shut down some bits and pieces. That means we lost the Web Site and the Forum, at least the ability to find it as we host the Website else where. I basically had to set up a fake proxy's in our data center in Las Vegas and implement DoH using QUIC instead of TCP as the transport layer as its encrypted end to end so it should be opaque agnostic to your ISP’s Transparent Caches and middleboxes and do some funky stuff, so it’s exposed on the public Internet.

Effectively you should still be able to type in vrra.ca or board.vrra.ca and it should actually resolve to some custom CNAME’s I created for the site and board. That’s the theory anyway.

This will obviously only work with newer browsers that support DoH and QUIC. If you have an old one, you are screwed.

If you get this message, try to upgrade your browser - “Bad Request. Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.”

Now, can you still buy gate tickets??? I have no idea.

Maybe PayPal is not smart enough to check the X-Forwarded-For header, but I can’t change the PayPal end point as I no longer have access through Russell. I don’t know who has the PayPal passwords now.

What will be missing until this gets resolved is the Sprint and Endurance Results and Season Standings as I can’t authenticate the website with AWS where the data is stored. AWS does check.

Oh. You may also notice that any ticket orders that come from the the VRRA to gmail end up in your spam/junk folder.

Thats because the SMTP proxy that send the emails no longer has access to the Kwic servers so it cant get the DMARC security record that confirms that this email actually came from the VRRA so Google treats it as spam.

This has to come from the Kwic server and there is nothing I can do until we move off Comcast/Kwic. Its a 10 second config change as well :(

Thank you Brian. Not sure how many people in the club can do what you do.
