Excellent banter comrades. I think the F7 will be the candidate based on all that useful feedback. . I must finish a street Daytona project first then onward. I will update the forum with progress on the Kaw. (you know it is the only Japanese mark I have never owned).... my Dad used to call them krapisaki's I am not so sure ...... I also have a YDS3 begging to be started but parts are proving difficult.

The YDS-3 would be a fun bike, just a little difficult to keep the cast iron cylinders from seizing at racing speeds.
I've also heard of the crankshaft-mounted clutch giving problems at high rpm's (TD1's had a similar problem) but the fixes must be known as there are a number of them still being raced.
I don't know if it's "legal", but the 1967 YDS-5 cylinders are aluminum with cast-in sleeves and use the same base gasket, so...?
Probably the YDS-5 is the better choice for P1-250 anyway as it has a more modern engine, with the clutch on the tranny mainshaft, not the crank, plus the aforementioned alloy barrels. You could drive Stan nuts with one LOL.
So far, my saga for a P1 200 bike:
the first BSA 250 I looked at is all rebuilt, pretty nice shape, out of my price range even if the owner was in the mood to sell (he isn't right now),
the '71 BSA is too nice to convert to racing and would make a nice little street bike with a bit of work (has an ownership),
one of the '69 Triumph T25's is way overpriced and needs a rebuild, but has an ownership,
another T25 I found on ebay seems about the right price and condition to convert to a race bike, but is a 1000 miles away LOL,
Aaaaaannnnd... yesterday afternoon I was on the phone with a retired gentleman farmer who has a 175 Kawasaki in his barn. He thinks it's an F7 but is going to check the year of manufacture and get back to me. I rode the bike about 15 years ago but forgot about it 'til recently. He had an ownership for it at one time but "can't find it"... but if he does, the bike will probably go to a friend instead of being modified for road racing. My buddy had one as a kid, bought a KE100 awhile ago to rekindle those old memories but finds that he needs the bigger motor for more oomph (40 years and 50 pounds will do it to you).
Anyway, the search continues...

I have a soft spot for yds3,it was my first real bike. They would race pre 65/350 & bump to P1/250.
The ds5 is legal in p1,as is the td1.You are right about the clutch,it was moved to the tranny for the td1c & the ds5.I fought with stan over the yds6 which has the same frame as the ds5 & the same bottom end but a real 5 port barrel as apposed to the carved in the cylinder type of the ds5.Intresting enough the ds5 makes more power & is faster than the ds6.
Pat I know where there is a triumph 250 flattracker for $1500.You can also try Dave Jones. He was selling a bunch of bikes on the weekend(I could not make it)& he had a triumph 250.Not sure of the price or if it sold.

Just for reference, the YDS5 and YDS6 actually use different cases as the cylinders are not interchangeable. The YDS6 has a wider stud spacing to accommodate the extra port. While most of everything else can interchange, the important stuff doesn't really making it a different generation...

Lol! Just trying to keep traffic coming to the site

BTW, it would be great to see some YDS's on the track...I might be able to help with YDS3 parts.

Hey Jeremy,
Not disputing your DS6 comment, but the YDS-3 and YDS-5 cylinder base gaskets are the same P/N, so shouldn't the DS5 cylinders fit on the DS3 cases... which was my suggestion wan't it?
Ya the DS6 stud spacing was the same as the RD's up to the RZ, wasn't it -the "notorious" DS6 cases? But that stuff is all a bit new for me - I faded out around 1976 and by curious coincidence, have the Doobie Bros blasting away in the other room and I think they faded out around the same time. Smell the polyester, touch the platform shoes...

Hi Pat,

I was only referring to Brads post. DS3 and DS5 are the same. DS6 (last of the vertically split 250's) is the same architecture as 3 and 5 but different stud spacing. 3, 5 and 6 all look the same. I suspect you are confusing the DS6 and the DS7. The DS7 is the piston-port horizontally-split predecessor to the reed-valve RD350. They were the engines that shared many parts. Brad was talking about retro-fitting DS6 cylinders onto a DS5, which for reasons stated above won't work.

I hope you ride out that polyester flashback okay!

Right you are about DS7 cases - horizontally split, DS6 vertical split. Not polyester poisoning, more like Pabst overdose LOL.
Anyway, back to P1: get to look at the Kaw 175 next week - I'll let you know how it turns out.
