my .02, as I'm only running a starter (no kick access).
My experience was you need either a big battery (with total loss), or run an alternator, and small light weight battery. I went with the later (PM alternator & PC310). Also negated any issues with running a Boyer ignition (eg. low voltage), and electronic tach (extra draw). Does add to the wiring complexity though.

several of the racers use a separate mobile battery or booster pack with cables to turn the start motor from exposed terminals, thus avoiding voltage drop needed for ign. Rollers are another option. Paul.
