Hey folks
Looking for some recommendations on a good starter race bike that is smaller displacement and would be a relatively reasonably priced gateway drug for racing

Kawasaki EX500, don't have one for sale, but a great place to start.

Hmm...Purchase an already built reliable race bike (helps if from a VRRA member), from a Period and manufacturer that attract you, perhaps with a smaller displacement (unless you're comfortable with more power), for which parts are relatively easy to get, and is easy to work on. I know, complicated answer!
The machines already mentioned are good choices (Kawi EX500 and Honda CB350).
I'll add the Honda Hawk to the list.
